August 24, 2010
The third week in August is typically the beginning of the fall run of big flounder. This one struck a Berkley Gulp twisty tail hooked on a jig head fished in the Cape Fear River.
We caught several fish that day, including a Cape Fear Slam of specks, reds and flounder, also had come bonnethead sharks and bluefish. If we had a Spanish mackerel, we would have had the super slam.
Latest Fishing Report
The fall fishing has begun with a super mullet run, which is bringing game fish to the coast. The tarpon bite has been excellent at Bald Head Island and Pamlico Sound. Giant reds in Pamlico. Big reds of 30-40 inches at Carolina Beach in the surf and inlets. Big flounder up to 7 to 9 pounds at the inlets and nearshore bottoms. Lots of small bluefish have showed up. Speckled trout catches are picking up, with lots of keeper sized fish in the sounds, at the jetties and in the Cape Fear River. Big kings are right on the beaches. Several nice king mackerel catches have occurred recently at the piers. Join us at the weigh-in for the Brunswick Island Saltwater Classic, hosted by our North Carolina Public Access Foundation, with proceeds going to boat ramps, piers and other access areas. Held at Fish Factor Road, South Harbor Island Marina, Oak Island, NC Friday Aug. 27 (captain's meeting) and Saturday Aug. 28 (Weigh-in). Lots of items offered to the public, including clothing, rods reels, artwork, the usual cool fishing stuff at discounted prices. See you there. We can still use more volunteers. Seeing a tournament from the inside is lots of fun!
